ABO Review : 'Adipurush`

`Adipurush`: An epic tale Re-told!

Story:

Raghava (played by Prabhas) is the Prince of Ayodhya. Janaki (portrayed by Kriti Sanon) accompanies him to the forest when he is banished from the palace owing to intrigue. Their peaceful existence is shattered when a wicked demon king named Lankesh (played by Saif Ali Khan) kidnaps Janaki. Determined to rescue her, Raghava embarks on a perilous journey to Lanka, an isolated island far away. Accompanying him are his faithful brother, Seshu (Sunny Singh), and the courageous Bhajrang (Devdatta Nage), who offer their unwavering support in this challenging mission.

Performances:

Prabhas`s earnest portrayal effectively complements Raghava`s persona in the context of the film. His sincerity accentuates the overall narrative. The actor also exhibits a strong aura. Kriti Sanon stays true to her character`s intended impact. A few scenes and a song involving them enhance the chemistry between them.

Both Saif Ali Khan and Devdatta Nage are somewhat stylized (especially the former). The choice to portray Lankesh in a certain polished way might not impress some, but many could well find it to possess a contemporary edge. Director Om Raut`s idea may have been to present the antagonist in a way that the youngest segment of audiences finds appealing. Vatsal Sheth as Meghanada is not so effective. Sunny Singh as Seshu gets a static characterization.

Technical Departments:

Background score: Some scenes are taken to the next level by BGM.

Music (songs): Ajay-Atul duo delivers a soaring, dynamic output. `Jai Shri Ram` has a triumphalist tone.

Cinematography: Good enough.

Technical quality: Live-action is expected to look "as close to reality as possible". The VFX is not jarring but it is not outstanding either.

Analysis:

The epic Ramayana-based movie has opened to singularly head-turning openings. Director Om Raut was inspired by the spirit of the 1992 Japanese anime film `The Prince of Light: The Legend of Ramayana` in making `Adipurush`. "Has there ever been a story in which nature, God, man, and animals were so united in sorrow, fighting, and rejoicing together?" an article about the Japanese movie once asked, capturing the mythical essence of the epic.

The film is an attempt to capture the cosmological nature of the epic tale without making it seem melodramatic or old-fashioned. The screen presence of the many characters is impressive. The dialogue comes with an everyday vibe.

Merits:

Prabhas` likeable and commanding screen presence.

The build-up to the introduction of Hanuman and the Vanara Sena.

The first danger encountered by Rama in the river.

Some situations keep the tempo high.

The Ram Setu episode.

A Hollywood-like interpretation of extras.

Towering characters.

Demerits:

Lanka looks too polished and filmy. There is no mythical feel.

Some elements are too mainstream for an epic movie.

In the case of negative characters, the costumes are exceptionally plastic.
