Review: `Bhagavanth Kesari`

Headline: A Dignified Commercial Entertainer

Plot:

Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari (Balakrishna) has to save his adopted daughter Viji (Sree Leela) when a notorious tycoon named Rahul Sanghvi (Arjun Rampal) wants to kill her for no fault of hers. Kesari, who has a history of executing a glorified massacre, won`t spare Sanghvi and his gang of blood-curdling henchmen. Meanwhile, a psychologist named Kathyayani (Kajal Aggarwal) is in love with him.

Performances:

In an attempt to reinvent himself, Nandamuri Balakrishna surrenders himself to Anil Ravipudi`s occasionally light-veined and sometimes carefree writing. The lighter action scenes have come out stronger even though the actual advantage is ensured by the emotions at the core. Both Balayya and Sree Leela engage the audience even though the latter`s performance could have been way more earnest.

Arjun Rampal`s villainy comes with gravitas. His screen presence is a surprise. As a limping baddie who knows how to game the system and reach the top, the Bollywood actor looks convincing. Importantly, the dubbing is not odd.

Kajal Aggarwal shines in a role that doesn`t require her to dance in Annapurna Studio sets. John Vijay is good in a semi-comedy role.   A lot of artists who have traditionally been cast in negative roles have been cast in, well, negative roles. Naren and Bharath Reddy, Ravi Shankar, Subbaraju and Srikanth Iyengar to name a few. Muralidhar Goud, Jeevan Kumar, and Subhalekha Sudhakar are also seen.

Technical Departments:

Music (songs): Don`t hinder the flow. Don`t turn out to be memorable either.

Background Score: Thaman doesn`t overdo the decibel levels. He also adds some style.

Cinematography: Adds to the film`s appeal.

Stunts: V Venkat`s work is a mixed bag.

Analysis:

Dialogue writing has been an area of strength as far as Ravipudi is concerned. `Bhagavanth Kesari`, easily his career`s most mass film, is adorned with punchlines. Balakrishna revels in issuing warnings to all sorts of villains. He likes to threaten both desperadoes and comedy villains with the worst consequences. That`s what he does here with a relish.

At first, the film suffers from pacing issues. Later on, it somehow finds a self-correcting mechanism. It is good that some tracks haven`t been stretched out.

In an era where action entertainers are turning too hackneyed, `Bhagavanth Kesari` redeems itself with the help of Balakrishna. Shine Screens` production values help.

Merits:

1. Balakrishna`s performance.

2. The dialogues pack both power and wit.

3. The elevation of heroism in multiple episodes.

4. The carefree nature of some action scenes.

Demerits:

1. A stupid antagonist who doesn`t wield his enormous power to gather intelligence even though everyone is at his beck and call.

2. Kajal Aggarwal`s obvious psychology lessons.

3. The Brahmaji track is replete with dated ideas.

Overall Rating: 2.75/5

Box-office Verdict: In a 3-way Clash scenario, while this has enough in it, a lot will depend on Tomorrow`s release. Minimum Guarantee though.
