ABO Review : `Kushi`
Review: Kushi
Headline: Tailor-made for wholesome Entertainment!
Plot:
Viplav (Vijay Deverakonda) falls in love with Samantha`s character Aradhya during his brief stint in Kashmir as part of his work. Aradhya appears to be a Pakistani Muslim in search of her missing brother in Kashmir. When Viplav comes to know that she is a Kakinada-based Telugu Brahmin girl, he believes his love marriage will be a smooth affair.
This is when Aradhya drops a bombshell. Her father is a die-hard Hindu preacher who has angered Viplav`s atheistic father Lenin Sathyam on a number of occasions. Aradhya`s father puts forth a condition for their wedding, thereby antagonizing Lenin Sathyam. Viplav and Aradhya decide to chart their own independent path. But it won`t be smooth sailing after their marriage, as compatibility issues crop up.
Performances:
Vijay Deverakonda is effortless. He has not looked this good in years. For once, he must be appreciated for not experimenting with his looks or dialogue delivery. Samantha Ruth Prabhu is equally effortless. Donning a traditional woman`s role, she looks vulnerable and soft; and cute in the scenes where she has to look meek/confused.
While the film essentially belongs to the lead pair, the next best set of performances is from the Rohini-Jayaram duo. As an older couple, they are predictable yet endearing.
Murali Sharma assumes the right body language in the role of a famous preacher. Sachin Khedekar, as the rationalist thought leader, should have had better lines to speak. Among the ones wasted are Rahul Ramakrishna, Sharanya Pradeep and Srikanth Iyengar. Vennela Kishore stands somewhere in between.
Technical Departments:
Music (Songs): Delightful!
Background Score: Good enough.
Cinematography: G Murali knows his job.
Editing: Prawin Pudi should have edited the Kashmir portions better.
Production Values: No complaints about Mythri Movie Makers` commitment.
Analysis:
The trailer for the film made it clear that the audience are not expected to take the Kashmir portions seriously. Barring one forced insertion that refers to the Kashmir track in the second half, three-fourths of the first half is meant for entertainment. Vennela Kishore, as a government staff member fearing gunfights between Indian jawans and Pakistan-backed terrorists, is a relief to watch. Vijay makes even ordinary writing shine.
The actual story begins about 20 minutes before the interval. Sparks fly once the characters played by Murali Sharma and Sachin Khedekar take over. In the second half, the engagement levels only deepen.
The doctrinal rivalry, the romance between a young couple, the one-year leap, the trauma - such elements have been shown well.
Merits:
1. Making parents integral to the main story.
2. Delivering an unapologetic family drama without diluting some important issues.
3. Delectable visuals and delicious performances.
4. No melodramatic or over-the-top treatment.
5. Feel-good portions involving two supporting characters (played by Rohini and Jayaram).
Demerits:
1. Unconvincing portrayal of a few characters showing a change of heart.
2. The incoherence of the Kashmir portions in the overall scheme of things.
Overall Rating: 3/5
Box-office Verdict: A Kushi-ful Hit!
